eARThistic TRASHion!

Last Thursday, the SSIS - Malarayat Campus ramps were transformed into a runway, where students showed-off their fashion designs made of recyclable materials.

As part of the Math and Science Culminating Activity, the eARThistic designing/modelling contest is geared towards environmental awareness which is integral to the theme: “Utilizing Our Scientific and Mathematical Competencies for an Environment-Friendly Community.”

Upper School students made trash gleam with elegance as they took to the catwalk their dresses fashioned out of recyclable materials.

Nine groups from the four Upper School classes participated. They were given a week to conceptualize their designs and create the outfits applying Math concepts they learned in class. Each team also has to choose someone from among their group to be the model who would display their creations on the catwalk at the culminating event.

GEOMETRY (Kim Morato - US III). bottle caps, magazines, shells, scratch paper

EBONY IVORY (Ellaine Garcia - US I). garbage bag, bottle caps, paper flowers, newspaper

MYSTIC (Lauren Mando - US I). magazine strips,  scratch paper, used plastic bag

Ms. Alea Ann Macam, a Math teacher and co-organizer of the event, said that the activity was an opportunity for the students to use Math concepts, specifically Geometry, while giving them a venue for expressing their creativity and environmental consciousness.

TECHNO (Bella Fragman - US II). CDs, newspapers, magazine cutouts

FLAMBOYANT. (Joselle Pulgado - US II). newspapers, garbage bags, used gift wrappers

Student-models strutted down the runway wearing their voguish to avant-garde outfits, which were made of garbage bags, CDs, newspapers, magazines, dry leaves, plastic bags, scratch papers, bottle caps, and used scrapbook materials.

CARNATION (Alexandra Natividad - US II). plastic bags, newspapers

SKY (Elyssa Sicat). bottle caps, newspapers strips, garbage bag, paper flowers

GOLDEN ANGEL (Alice Choi - US IV). newspaper flower, dry leaves, crepe paper, metal wires, beads, CDs

Two of the most unusual entries in the event were an armoured ensemble created with bottle caps  worn by an Upper School III student, Kimberly Morato, and a chic stiletto covered neatly with newspaper worn by Bella Fragman of Upper School II.

Six judges were invited from the Administration and Lower School Departments, who evaluated the outfits based on Presentation, Application of Math Concepts, Resourcefulness, and Materials Used.

Revelled in the show’s reception, Mr. Anthony Paul Calado, the Head Master of the school, commented, “I find the activity very meaningful as it opened the eyes of the students to the possibility of creating something beautiful out of trash.”

He added that he admired the determination and artistic capacity of the students who participated in the event.

“It made them realize that something good can still come out of scrap materials.”

Mr. Niño Galacgac, guidance counsellor and one of the judges said, “I was amazed by how the kids created something unique and stylish out of the materials most people prefer to throw away. It showed their creativity and care for the environment at the same time.

“Seeing the creativity of the students, it’s amazing that something such as garbage can be made into something attractive.”
